Sometimes it's nice to get away. Thanks to environmentalist Howard Zahniser, Americans
can do that in one of the country's many wildernesses—sheltered from human activities.
While the protection of national forests and parks began in the late 1800s, untamed
wilderness had dwindled to only 2.5% of US land by the 1960s. To reverse this trend,
Zahniser wrote most of what became the Wilderness Act.

Pictured in today's image, Crystal Lake, in the Enchantments, Washington, is in one such
protected area. Located in the Alpine Lakes Wilderness, the Enchantments region has more
than 700 lakes and ponds and some of the best rock climbing in the Western US. It's also
home to mountain goats, ptarmigan, pikas, and many alpine flowers. If you want to see Alpine
Lakes Wilderness yourself, however, be prepared to wait. Few permits are granted for day
hikes, and of the 40,000 people who entered last year's lottery for overnight permits, only
2,558 received one.

The meaning of the word babbo in Italian. Babbo is a local translation for dad or daddy. It is a
local translation because it’s used this way only in Tuscany. In all other Italian regions, dad
is translated as papà. But in Tuscany there are more than half of the dusky eagle owl
Bubo/babbo.

Owls are some of the most recognizable birds in the world. This doesn’t come off as a
surprise, as the various species of owls are found in every continent on the planet, except
Antarctica. These many species of owls come in many shapes and colors, with some small
enough to sit in the palm of your hand. Others, though, can grow much bigger than most
people expect. The largest owl in the world, the Blakiston’s Owl Fish, which name was taken
from British naturalist Thomas Blakiston, was first documented in 1883. It can grow up to
72 cm long from beak to tail, with a wingspan of up 200 cm.

The Eurasian Eagle Owl can actually grow to have a longer body than Blakiston’s Fish Owl, at
up to 75 cm long. However, they have smaller wingspans of only up to 188 cm, making them
only the second-largest owls in the world. The Eurasian Eagle Owl lives across most of Asia,
though they avoid the tropical regions of South and Southeast Asia. They also avoid the cold
regions of Siberia and Northern Europe but have since spread into Southern Europe. The bird’s
vast habitat range has allowed its population to grow, with scientists estimating up to a million
Eurasian Eagle Owls in the world today. This, in turn, has made the bird a species of least concern
for environmentalists.

Stanley Kubrick's adaptation of Anthony Burgess' novel takes viewers on an unsettling journey
through a dystopian future where youth violence runs rampant. The story follows Alex DeLarge
(Malcolm McDowell), whose love for Beethoven's music is matched only by his penchant for
brutality until he undergoes experimental conditioning to "cure" him of his violent tendencies.
With its striking visuals and exploration of free will versus societal control, this film remains
both thought-provoking and deeply disturbing.

Featuring a young Jake Gyllenhaal as the titular character, this psychological thriller follows a
troubled teenager who encounters eerie visions of a man in a monstrous rabbit suit. As the plot
unfolds, Donnie grapples with questions about time travel, fate, and his own sanity. The film's
unique blend of sci-fi elements with teenage angst creates an unforgettable cinematic
experience.

This dark fantasy from director Guillermo del Toro is set in 1954 Spain, where a young girl
named Ofelia (Ivana Baquero) becomes entangled in an enchanting and nightmarish fairy
tale world inhabited by mystical creatures. As she navigates her way through this parallel
realm to complete a series of tasks, Ofelia also confronts the harsh realities of war and
human cruelty in her own world. The film's captivating visuals and poignant storytelling
make it an unforgettable journey into both wonder and darkness.

In this neo-noir sci-fi thriller directed by Alex Proyas, an amnesiac man named John Murdoch
(Rufus Sewell) wakes up in a mysterious city that seems to be controlled by malevolent beings
called "The Strangers." As he unravels the truth about his past and the nature of reality itself,
John must find a way to stop these sinister forces before they consume him entirely. The film's
atmospheric visuals and inventive narrative make it a standout entry in the science fiction
genre.
